We report here results from first year of the BMW MINI E deployment. BMW deployed 450 MINI E?s to North America. Nearly 50% were leased by households in Los Angeles and the New York area. PH&EV Center researchers surveyed MINI E drivers throughout their year with the vehicles, focusing on the experiences of 50 households who volunteered for more detailed interviews. We report here their experiences with driving electric vehicles, adaptions to daily range limitations, and using electricity as a fuel.

Some the OBD-II regulations have been around for a long time or seem to be intuitively obvious. It is easy to assume to assume that everyone knows how to implement them correctly, that is, until someone actually reads the words and tries to do it. Most often, these issues come up when modifying existing OBD features, not when creating completely new ones. This presentation contains a few examples of features that should have been easy to implement, but turned out not to be easy or simple. Presenter Paul Algis Baltusis, Ford Motor Co.

Revisions to the California OBD-II diesel regulations required many updates to various SAE and ISO on-board diagnostic standards; these include major revisions to SAE J1979, J1699-3, J2012 and J1930. This presentation is intended to review the background for these changes as well as the revisions made in these documents. Presenter Robert Gruszczynski, Volkswagen of America

Translating service information into multiple human natural languages is a major expense for multinational corporations. Indeed corporations spend significant amounts to reduce their translation expense by managing the reuse text and its translation. The new frontier in reducing translation expense is translation avoidance, eliminating text through using illustrations and animations to communicate. Presenter Arnold Taube

Despite significant investment by both government and industry, the electric vehicle is not achieving the market share needed to make a significant impact on carbon emissions and energy independence. This presents some particular questions to policymakers and manufacturers; how to overcome the barriers to development and adoption in a tough economic climate? how can industry be encouraged to develop electric vehicle technology that meets consumers performance and pricing needs and how can consumers be encouraged to buy? The dramatic reductions in CO2 emissions required by international law present some formidable targets that need to be met over the coming two decades. How can we accelerate EV adoption to help achieve them?
