In “EV Charging and the Vehicle-to-Grid Potential” (10:29), engineers from NextEnergy show how users can take advantage of electric vehicles not only as green transportation, but also as power suppliers. The case study of a bi-directional vehicle-to-home charging project is presented in detail. Qualcomm’s Halo technology for wireless EV charging is also demonstrated in this episode. This episode highlights: NextHome, an experiment that makes bi-directional charging a reality How to integrate energy systems to manage energy flows from the car, the house and the grid How to manage the way we can purchase energy for different purposes when prices are the most affordable Also Available in DVD Format To subscribe to a full-season of Spotlight on Design, please contact SAE Corporate Sales: CustomerSales@sae.org or 1-888-875-3976.

The introduction of hybrid and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles has resulted in the introduction of battery systems into the realm of OBD II diagnostics. After a high-level overview of battery systems, general battery system fault responses are discussed, as well as which of these might be OBD faults. The alignment of the OBD regulations and DTC assignment in systems with large numbers of similar/identical components is discussed, along with apparent conflicts between existing OBD regulations and the physical realities of battery systems in HEVs and PHEVs. Presenter Dyche Anderson, Ford Motor Co.

As the need to develop better and less expensive batteries for automotive applications continues, we will likely need to examine potential tradeoffs between enhanced performance and costs. In particular, the choice of cathode materials automatically involves changes in performance and material costs. We will examine some of the possible cathode materials for use in next-generation battery packs, and the financial implications regarding those materials. Presenter Jon Hykawy, Byron Captial Markets
