Advances of Virtual Testing and Hybrid Simulation in Automotive Performance and Durability Evaluation

Moir� method is useful to measure the shape and the whole-field distributions of displacement and strain of structures. There are many kinds of moir� methods such as geometric moir� method, sampling moir� method, Fourier transform moir� method, moir� interferometry, shadow moir� method and moir� topography. Grating method analyzing directly deformation of a grating without any moir� fringe pattern is considered as an extended technique of moire method. Phase analysis of the moire fringe patterns and the grating patterns provides accurate measurements of shapes or displacement and strain distributions. Some applications of these moir� methods and grating methods to dynamic shape and strain distribution measurements of a rotating tire, sub-millimeter displacement measurements from long distance for landslide prediction, real-time shape measurements with micro-meter order accuracy, etc. are shown. Hybrid Vehicle Battery OBD: Why, Wherefore, and How

Plug In Charging Systems are mainly responsible for transferring energy from the electric power grid into one or more vehicle energy storage devices (e.g. batteries). A satisfactorily operating Plug in Charging System has the following three key performance characteristics. First, the charge process starts up easily. Second, it completes the charge process within some expected time. Third, it charges efficiently so that excessive amounts of power are not wasted. When a Plug In Charging System malfunction exists and negatively affects one or more of these key performance criteria, it is the responsibility of the OBD monitoring system to identify the fault and notify the customer. The presentation will discuss the key performance characteristics described above and some of the diagnostic strategies used to detect faults. The discussion will also include an overview of MIL illumination and freeze frame storage capabilities.

Monitoring of Diesel Particulate Filter Using Soot Sensor for EU6 OBD

Many manufactures are currently working on solutions to fulfill CARB MY 13 requirements for monitoring of diesel particulate filters using a soot sensor. Europe might follow by introducing new OBD limits with EU6 regulation. In this presentation we show results from a study investigating the monitoring capability of a soot sensor in combination with EU6 emission calibration and the OBD matriculate mass limit as proposed in EC 595/2009. A defective diesel particulate filter (DPF) has been detected on roller test bench and under normal driving conditions on public roads. Improvement in OBD Development Process for HEV's

Hybrid technology has the potential to enable dramatic reductions in greenhouse gases (GHG), such as the California goal of reducing GHG by 80 percent from 1990 levels by 2050. As a result it is expected that hybrid systems will occupy a growing proportion of the market. However, introducing a hybrid system in a vehicle may adversely affect the performance of the engine OBD system in monitoring malfunctions impacting pollutant emissions. For example, a hybrid system that reduces time of the engine in idle or deceleration overrun conditions could make a well-performing engine OBD system noncompliant, by reducing in-use frequency of some OBD monitors below acceptable levels. In this presentation, Ricardo will present a process for evaluating the impact that a hybrid system which has been optimised to minimise GHG emission over a specified drive-cycle will have on the effectiveness of engine OBD monitors.

Monitoring Urea Quantity Delivery for Diesel SCR After-treatment

While providing significant benefits to vehicle operation and emissions, on board diagnosis comes at a cost. In many cases the additional cost comes in the form of reduced optimal performance. Often the additional cost can be mitigated by considering the OBD requirements early in the development stages. In this presentation we show these trade-offs in a number of case studies. We will point out where the ability to diagnose comes at the cost of suboptimal performance, and where system design decisions can facilate the OBD task. PM Sensors

Watlow and EmiSense Technologies, LLC are commercializing an improved electronic particulate matter (PM) sensor that has real-time measurement capability and improved sensitivity. To demonstrate the capability of this improved sensor of on board diagnostics (OBD) for failure detection of diesel particle filters (DPF), independent measurements were performed by university of California Riverside (UCR) and by Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) to characterize the engine PM emissions and to compare with the PM sensor response. In situ PM measurements from PM sensors correlate well with real-time gravimetric measurements. In addition, particle size and particle number data are presented and discussed.Due to an improved design update, the sensitivity of the sensor could have been significantly increased.

New OBD requirements should be as consistent as possible with existing requirements to maximize reliability and to minimize system complexity, proliferation of configurations, and consumer cost. New OBD requirements from around the world are briefly reviewed and most are consistent with the original U.S. and European requirements. This presentation provides an overview of the regulatory requirements for OBD systems on hybrid vehicles that intend to certify in California. Evaluation of a NOx Transient Response Method for OBD of SCR Catalysts

OBD requirements for aftertreatment system components require monitoring of the individual system components. One such component can be an NH3-SCR catalyst for NOx reduction. An OBD method that has been suggested is to generate positive or negative spikes in the inlet NH3 concentration, and monitor the outlet NOx transient response. A slow response indicates that the catalyst is maintaining its NH3 storage capacity, and therefore it is probably not degraded. A fast response indicates the catalyst has lost NH3 storage capacity, and may be degraded. The purpose of the work performed at Southwest Research Institute was to assess this approach for feasibility, effectiveness and practicality.
